More than 6 million Americans join hands for the Hands Across America event
Over $20 Million Raised
To fight hunger and homelessness in America
Hands Across America (HANDS) was launched in October, 1985. Considered at that time to be the largest community participation effort in our nation’s history, HANDS was just impossible enough to be possible.
The dream quickly erupted into an unparalleled show of heartfelt concern. The event brought together millions of people to generate a national consensus that hunger and homelessness existed and that we must answer the call to help shelter and feed those in need. It was an impassioned outpouring in tandem with America’s response to the famine in Africa in 1985.
We mourn the passing of the incomparable Harry Belafonte, our partner, our advocate, our friend. Harry’s commitment was unparalleled as evidence by a life of 90+ years fighting for justice here in the US, and around the globe. He gave voice to legions who would have never been heard otherwise. He epitomized the notion that, “We Are the World”, as nobody else ever would and lifted up humanity.
